Determine whether or not you need a visa. Currently travelers from more than 50 countries including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States do not need a visa for stays of up to 3 months in duration. Check the Mauritius Immigration Homepage for a complete listing (see Resources).
Apply for a visa if you need one. If you come from a non-visa exempt country, are intending to stay on Mauritius for longer than 3 months, if you are traveling to conduct business or seek employment or to complete an academic program you will need a visa. Download and fill out the application (see Resources). It is a basic, one page document in which you officially declare the purpose of your visit and the length of time you intend to stay.
Ensure you have had the following vaccinations: smallpox, cholera, and yellow fever. You may be asked to show proof of having received inoculations against these specific disorders prior to entering the country.
Collect the following items: 2 official passport type photographs, current government issued passport, official letter from your health insurance provider stating you have adequate coverage for the duration of your stay in Mauritius, copies of reservations for accommodation on Mauritius, current bank statement, proof of return or onward travel, one letter of reference from your previous employer (if seeking work), letter of acceptance to an academic program in Mauritius (if applicable) and a money order for the amount of the current visa fees.
Make photocopies of all of the items listed in the previous step. Keep your photocopies until all your original documents have been returned.
Call the Mauritius embassy or consulate in your country to find out their current hours of operation and to make an appointment to apply for a visa. Submissions made in person require approximately 5 business days to process. If there is no consulate or embassy in your country, submit all original documents to the Air Mauritius agency nearest you or mail them to the Mauritius Passport and Immigration Office on the island -- call 230-210-9312-19 or email them at [email protected]
for the current address and mailing instructions. Alternatively you can check the Immigration home page under the heading 'contact us'.
Mail your visa application to your local embassy consulate, if you wish, being sure to include all original documents and a pre-paid envelope bearing your home address for the return of your personal items. Applications processed through the mail take 4 to 5 weeks.
