How to Apply for a Visa in Canada

Citizens of the United States and several other countries worldwide can enter and visit Canada without a visa for up to 180 days. If you already have a visa, but would like to stay longer, you can arrange an appointment with an immigration officer in Canada before your visa expires to try to have your visa extended.

Apply for a passport if you do not already have one. If you are a citizen of the United States, this is probably all you will be required to do in order to enter Canada and visit for a short period of time. To apply for a passport, have passport photos taken and fill out an application at your local post office. Citizens of some other countries may also be exempt from Temporary Resident Visa requirement. For a complete list of countries whose residents do not need visas, see the Resources section.

Find out what type of visa you require. A single entry visa will allow you a one-time entry into Canada from countries other than the United States or the French-owned islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. A multiple entry visa will allow you to enter Canada from any country multiple times. A transit visa will allow you to stay in Canada for a period of up to 48 hours for the purpose of transportation.

Obtain proof that you will be able to fund your trip to Canada for yourself as well as any dependent family members. This requirement can be satisfied by providing photocopies of your bank statements, investment portfolio, recent paychecks, pay stubs or other financial documents.

    • 4

Obtain two photos of yourself as well as any family members accompanying you. All photos must be 35 millimeters by 45 millimeters and show your face clearly with a neutral expression.

    • 5

Fill out form IMM 5256, application for Temporary Resident Visa, indicating what type of visa for which you are applying. Attach all necessary documents including photos, proof of valid passport, proof of ability to financially support your trip, any immigration documents you have already acquired like a work or study permit, and payment for fees. Fees are $75 Canadian per person for single entry visas, $150 for multiple entry visas or $400 for family applications.

Check which Canadian visa office is responsible for your area (seek the Resources section for a complete list of visa offices worldwide), and submit your application package to the appropriate office. You should also check which forms of payment are acceptable for your local office before submitting.

Speak with an officer at the port of entry when you arrive in Canada. If all documents are in order, the officer will then tell you how long you may stay in Canada.
