How to Apply for UK Ancestry

As a Commonwealth national with ancestral ties to the United Kingdom, you can obtain UK entry clearance on the basis of your parentage. If one of your grandparents was born in the United Kingdom, the Isle of Man or the Channel Islands, a UK Ancestry visa allows you to enter the United Kingdom and work for up to five years. After this initial period, you can apply for permanent residence (Indefinite Leave to Remain) and, subsequently, British nationality. If you or one of your parents is adopted, you will also be able to apply for a UK Ancestry visa. As well as having familial ties to the UK, the country’s immigration rules specify that you must be at least 17 years of age, able to work and support yourself without claiming state benefits.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply for UK entry clearance at your local British high commission, consulate or embassy before traveling to the UK. In line with the UK Border Agency regulations, your entry clearance must be obtained from outside the United Kingdom, notably your home country or the country where you are a legal resident.

    • 2

Apply for your UK Ancestry visa by completing an online form (see Resources). Unlike most visa applications, you may not require an interview so it is particularly important to provide accurate information and supporting documents.

    • 3

Supply documentary evidence to support your visa application. As well as a completed application form, the entry clearance officer assessing your application will need to see proof of your eligibility to apply for a visa under this category. Among other key documents, it is crucial to include your birth certificate, that of the parent or grandparent through whom you are claiming. If your application is based on adopted ancestry, you will also need to supply legal adoption papers as evidence.

    • 4

Apply through an immigration service provider, most of whom are widely available on the Internet. If you are unable to apply online or need help and guidance with your UK Ancestry visa application, then websites which specialize in visa applications may be of assistance to you. These sites often provide a personal service catered to your individual circumstances. Most will provide you with an immigration adviser who will review your personal circumstances and ensure that your application goes to the appropriate government agency for assessment.
