How to Apply for an H4

While being with a spouse or child is an everyday occurrence for many people, this type of family time requires a H4 visa if you are a U.S. immigrant with family living abroad. The spouse or child of a U.S. immigrant must obtain a H4 visa to enter the United States. The application process may seem overwhelming, especially if you're applying for the first time. But if you're equipped with a bit of patience and the proper documentation, the process should go smoothly.

      Provide proof of identity. You'll need a valid passport and a 2x2 inch photograph showing your full face without any head covering. If an applicant is under age 14, a copy of his or her original birth certificate must included with the documentation.

      Show proof of your marital status (if applicable). Gather your original marriage certificate, wedding album and a copy of the marriage invitation card of both families.

      Verify your spouse's H1 status. If you're visiting a spouse or parent in the United States, he or she must possess an H1 visa. Provide copies of his or her passport pages, the approved petition I797, form I-129 and LCA. If he or she holds an H1B visa, you must also submit an employment verification letter. If he or she is already working in the United States. a copy of a current pay stub and income tax return is also required.

      Fill out the non-immigration visa application. The application is also called the "H4 Visa Application Form DS-160." You can download the form from the Path 2 USA website at path2usa.com.

      Schedule a visa interview with the U.S. Consulate or embassy in your country. You'll receive a confirmation letter. Bring all your documentation to the interview, including a copy of the interview appointment letter. Your visa application will be processed once the interview is complete. You'll receive notification once your visa application is finalized.
