How to Apply for a Visa to Egypt

Egypt, the second most populated country in Africa, is described by tourism websites as being a gateway to Asia and Europe due to its unique location at the northernmost point of Africa. In addition to the nearly 80 million people who live in Egypt, tourists visit the Arab republic every year to immerse themselves in the ancient history of the pyramids and enjoy modern pleasures such as golfing and sunbathing on the beach. Travelers must have a visa to enter the country. The application process for an Egyptian tourist visa can be completed in your home country or at Egyptian ports of entry.

Instructions

    • 1

Get a copy of the Egyptian visa application. Download the application from the Egyptian embassy's website before you travel (see Resources). If you have not applied for a visa prior to your travel, you can obtain a visa application from a "port of entry" on the country's border, such as at the airport or on a cruise ship that is stopping in Egypt.

    • 2

Be sure that your current passport does not expire for at least six months after your trip to Egypt. Visa requirements also state that your passport must have a blank page on which to stamp your entry to Egypt. If you do not have any more free pages in your passport, you may need to get a new document.

    • 3

Complete the visa application with accurate information to ensure prompt processing. You'll need to know the address of where you will be staying in Egypt, as well as the dates of your last visit to the republic if you have visited before.

    • 4

Attach a letter stating that you have been offered employment in Egypt if you are applying for a business visa. The letter must originate from the Egyptian company or organization that has extended your job offer.

    • 5

Include a 2-inch by 2-inch color passport photo with your application for an Egyptian tourist or business visa. Visa requirements state "recent" but do not give further details. Play it safe by taking a passport photo within the past 30 days.

    • 6

Send or bring copies of your green card, an American visa or your travel documents (airline tickets) if you are not an American citizen but applying for an Egyptian visa in the United States.

    • 7

Pay the application fee required. The fee varies by nationality. The visa fee for American citizens is $15 as of May 2009. The fee is payable by cash or money order.

    • 8

Send your completed visa application to the nearest Egyptian representation in the United States along with a self-addressed envelope with return postage attach. Egypt has consular representation in Washington DC, New York, Chicago, Houston and San Francisco. If you live in one of those areas, you can make an appointment to have your visa processed in person.

    • 9

Wait for your visa to arrive in the mail. Tourist visas to Egypt are processed within 10 working days as long as the application has been filled out correctly and all supporting documents are included in the application package.
