How to Apply for a Visitor's Visa

If you are planning to travel to another country for recreation, business or medical purposes, you will be required to obtain a visitor's visa before you can enter the country. The application process for obtaining a visitor's visa can take months, so it is imperative that you begin applying as soon as you know you are planning to travel abroad.

      Make an appointment with the embassy consular in your region.

      Prove that you are eligible to apply for a visitor's visa. You must state your intent and purpose, the length of time you plan to stay, evidence of sufficient funds to support you during your stay, proof of personal relations or acquaintance and evidence of a permanent residence in your home country that you can return to.

      Fill out non-immigrant visa application form DS-156, answering all questions accurately. You must pay a fee in order to obtain this form. Save your receipt, as you will be required to present it during your application interview. You may be able to obtain the necessary forms online.

      Gather all necessary documentation, including your completed DS-156 form, a valid passport and a 2 inch by 2 inch photograph which is less than six months old.

      Submit to digital fingerprint scanning during your interview with the embassy. Be prepared to provide documentation outlining your purpose and intent abroad, such as hotel reservations, and a list of friends and family that may need to be contacted to confirm they know you are coming.

      Await the approval of your application. In the event that your visitor's visa application is denied, you may be able to re-apply if you can provide additional proof of the necessity of your trip.
