How to Obtain an Import License in Australia

Australia has an extremely strict quarantine policy which prohibits the importation of many plant and animal goods, among others. Something as simple as unknown soil in the tread of your shoes may land you in an interrogation room upon your arrival in any Australian airport. If you wish to import certain goods and materials, you can apply for an import permit from the Australian government.

Instructions

    • 1

Check the import requirements for whatever it is you wish to import. Do this by running an ICON online search using the link given under Resources. Type in your item in the "Commodity" box, select the country it is coming from, and the reason why you wish to use it.

    • 2

Note any important information from your ICON search, which will verify whether or not you even need to apply for a permit. The search will also confirm if there is any additional information that you need to include on your application form.

    • 3

Choose the appropriate application form for the item you wish to import. Use the Guide to Selecting the Correct Import Application form, available on the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) website. Most applications can be lodged online, with the exception of those for Disability Assistance Dogs. If your application is not available online, print it out from the website.

    • 4

Follow the instructions on the AQIS website that break down how you should fill out the application form for your specific item. Categories include Cats and Dogs, Reproductive Material, Biological Materials, and more. Complete your printed application.

    • 5

Check the table on the AQIS website (see resources) to determine which office you will need to submit your application to. This will apply to any applications that are not completed online.

    • 6

Submit your application, along with a check, cash, or credit card payment of the application fee. As of early 2010, the fee was $150AUD for paper applications and $85AUD for electronic applications. There will also be an additional fee that ranges from $40 to $320, depending on the import item.

    • 7

If your application is approved, you will be issued an import license. If it was applied for electronically, you will be issued an electronic license.
