Gay Tahitian Vacations

Tahiti, which consists of 118 islands, including the island of Tahiti, over two million square miles in the South Pacific Ocean, is approximately an eight hour trip by plane from the city of Los Angeles, according to Tahiti Tourism. Papeete, the capital of the island of Tahiti, was once a place where islanders gathered to fill their water baskets. Now, with high class resorts, fine dining and spas, extensive nightlife, and many markets and boutiques, it is a popular tourist destination. Polynesians are known for their warm welcomes which makes Tahiti a gay-friendly vacation destination.
  1. Resorts and Hotels

    • There are dozens of resorts and hotels on the island of Tahiti that are gay-friendly. According to Gay and Lesbian Tahiti, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people visiting Tahiti have many choices when it comes to lodging due to the island's welcoming nature. The options range from full-service resorts with spas, fitness rooms, and fine-dining restaurants to chain hotels offering affordable rates. In addition to resorts and hotels, there are a small number of Bed and Breakfasts on the island that offer lodging and dining combinations. Regardless of the accommodations, Tahiti has a lot to offer to the LGBT traveler.

    Activities

    • In addition to being a beautiful and relaxing place to visit, Tahiti offers a variety of activities and exhilarating experiences. Many LGBT visitors enjoy lounging and tanning on the white sand beaches and spending time in the world-class spas, but others are looking for more excitement. Adventure seekers can take tours of the island via hiking, horseback, helicopter, or 4x4 vehicles. Many water activities are available including snorkeling and diving, surfing, wake boarding, jet skiing, and shark feeding. Board a cruise ship, super yacht, or passenger freighter to travel between Tahiti's most beautiful islands to explore within the South Pacific Polynesian Islands.

    Nightlife

    • The Piano Bar, the most predominate gay and lesbian bar on the island of Tahiti, is located in the center of downtown Papeete. The bar opens earlier, but is most popular around midnight with the local "mahu" or "rae rae," island terms for the LGBT community. The local LGBT community has evolved over time, but in the past the term "mahu" referred to the transvestite population in pre-colonial Polynesia, that was historically thought to be divine and gifted. Gay & Lesbian Tahiti states that the smaller islands do not have as much nightlife to offer, but they do provide a romantic atmosphere and smaller bars and restaurants that are gay friendly.
