Tahiti is the largest island of French Polynesia, a group of 115 islands located in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is estimated that Tahiti was settled by Polynesians between A.D. 300 and A.D. 800, reports Polynesia.com.
  1. History

    • According to Polynesia.com, Samuel Wallis, a British Captain, first discovered Tahiti in 1767 and was closely followed by a Frenchman, Count Louis de Bougainville in 1768. Over the next 50 years, the British and French negotiated for control of the islands in the area with France emerging with control in 1842.

    • Tahiti is a tropical, humid location with an average year-round temperature of 79 degrees F. The summer season occurs from December through March, with winter occurring from April through August, reports GoAway.com.
