Catalina Island is a part of the Channel Islands archipelago. The island spans approximately 75 square miles, and is 8 miles across at its widest point. Avalon, the island's main town, can be explored easily on foot or by water taxi.

    • Catalina Island is located in Southern California. The island is approximately 20 miles west of mainland California and can be reached by boat, helicopter or private plane. Ferries to Catalina Island depart daily from cities including Dana Point, Long Beach and Newport Beach.

    Activities

    • Catalina Island is a popular destination for water lovers. The island's Mediterranean climate affords visitors the opportunity to participate in scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking and swimming nearly all year round. Private boats can also be rented, and fishing is allowed just off the coast. Hiking and biking are also popular activities, and many venues on the island offer bicycle rentals.

    Lodging

    • Catalina Island has more than 30 hotels, bed-and-breakfasts and condo rentals as of 2010. Many of the hotels, including Pavilion Hotel and Hotel Metropole are located on Avalon Bay. Visitors may also camp out at one of six campsites on the island.
