Bimini is located among the northernmost islands of the Bahamas, off the coast of Florida.
Several organizations have been started in an attempt to save the mangroves on the northern side of the island. The Bimini Tourist Resort wants to develop the land, while conservationists worry greatly about the plants and animals lost if that land is destroyed.
Tourism is the biggest industry in Bimini by far, putting a lot of pressure for expanded beaches and facilities in a very limited area. Bimini plants like mangroves and their ecosystem are feeling this pressure.
The Bimini Nature Trail is one way to try and meld tourism with protecting Bimini plant and animal life. The trail can be followed on foot or by jeep and displays Bimini palms, mangroves and flowers like the morning glory.
Tropical flowers are common all over Bimini Island, including chartreuse bougainvillea and morning glory, among others.
A selective program of replanting has resulted in over 400 coconut palms and over 1,000 mangrove seeds being planted on the island.
