American Island Vacations

The U.S. Virgin Islands may be among the best-known American island destinations around the world (after, of course, Hawaii). However, the breadth of the North American continent offers other options, from scenery reminiscent of the Mediterranean at Catalina Island to the luxurious retreat of Amelia Island, off the Florida coast.

    • The Anchorage Resort in St. Thomas is a favorite with families, due to its proximity to the beach and swimming pool. Set on the beach, the resort sports palm trees and tennis courts. Apartments are air conditioned with two or three bedrooms with queen-size and twin beds. All have TVs and maid service, kitchens are equipped with a microwave, washer and dryer. Balconies offer views of the beach and tennis courts. Rates start from $235 per night for a two-bedroom suite (as of 2010).

    Catalina Island

    • Catalina Island, an hour-long boat ride from Los Angeles, is a tourist and wedding destination. The city is full of life with street performers as well as restaurants and bars around the harbor. The Hotel Catalina has a choice of queen- or king-size beds, rooms with a mountain view, or a "honeymoon cottage." All have flat-screen TVs, wireless Internet access and refrigerators. Most rooms have balconies offering sea views, and a patio has seating, a barbecue, Jacuzzi and spa. As of 2010, rates start from $85 a night for a standard room in the winter months. Water activities such as snorkeling, para-sailing and even fishing are available on the island and are very popular.

    Amelia Island

    • Located just off the coast of Florida, Amelia Island appeals to many travelers, due to its untouched native wildlife and clean beaches. Resorts and restaurants are on the pricey side. The Days Inn & Suites is one of the more affordable options. The resort has a swimming pool, tennis courts, restaurant and Jacuzzi, while rooms are equipped with high-speed Internet access, cable TV, microwave and refrigerators. The resort is a few steps away from the beach, and rates start from $70 per person per night, as of 2010.
