The University of the Philippines in Baguio continues to improve its academic programs and research facilities, including the relatively new Cordillera Studies Center. Choose from courses in the colleges of science, arts and communication, business management and social sciences. First semester classes start in June. A short Christmas break splits the first and second semesters. The final month of classes for the academic year is March. Summer classes are also available for students during April and May.
Check out the Baguio Cathedral in the middle of the city. This colonial-style cathedral is perched on a hill overlooking the town and is one of the most visited points of interest in Baguio. Another place to visit is Mines View Park, a tourist attraction where guests observe stunning views of the Benguet Mountains and the town's old gold mine in the valley below. Get your picture taken with a native Igorot tribesman at the Mines View Observation Deck. Outdoor enthusiasts will also enjoy great mountain climbing in Baguio. Hike Mount Sto. Tomas and Mount Cabuyao, two of the highest peaks in the Philippines. Located just outside town, these two mountains have scenic trails that lead trekkers to the summits for panoramic views. Burnham Park is another nice place to visit in Baguio. This central park has tranquil waterways, athletic facilities and well-maintained flowerbeds.
Travel to Baguio by plane from Manila. Daily flights arrive at Baguio Airport and last roughly 40 minutes. Expect flight delays during the rainy season because of poor visibility. You can also get to Baguio from Manila with bus companies or with a rental car. Baguio is 155 miles north of the capital. Tour Baguio with a rental car or make use of the plentiful taxis in town. Visit Baguio between February and April for prime weather conditions. Whereas the capital city of Manila reaches muggy temperatures around 95 to 100 degrees F in the summer, Baguio remains relatively cool with high temperatures of just 80 degrees. Winter temperatures drop down as low as 50 degrees, and it can still be a little chilly in February and March as the second semester of classes wraps up. The dry season lasts from October to May, and heavy rains set in from June to September. The famous Panagbenga Flower Festival takes place in February with its festive floats and street performers. The weather is warmer in April, and this is an ideal time for students in summer school to enjoy outdoor activities in Burnham Park and other areas.
