Gay Travel in the Philippines

The 7,107 islands that make up the Philippines are a traveler's paradise. The warm, accepting attitude of the majority of the citizens make this a great place to visit. As with many destinations, travelers to the Philippines should be aware of local customs and laws.
  1. Attitude

    • Homosexuality is becoming increasingly accepted in the Philippines. However, as a predominantly Catholic and conservative society, there are limits to how open people may be with their sexuality.

    Gay Presence

    • The larger cities, Bohol, Boracay, Cebu and Manila in particular, enjoy a dynamic gay presence. The intersection of Maria Orosa Street and Julio Nakpil Street in Manila is the epicenter of gay nightlife with numerous sing-along and karaoke bars, restaurants and clubs.

    Legal Issues

    • While consenting relations in private between same-sex adults is not a crime, public displays of affection may fall under the "grave scandal" law which prohibits behavior "...contrary to...public order, morals, and good customs...". If found guilty, punishment can range from a jail term between one and thirty days or a fine up to 200 pesos, or just under $5 U.S. dollars. Repeat offenders will incur a lengthier jail term, higher fine or both.
