Primary Health Care in the Philippines

Individuals who go to the Philippines should not always expect to have the same level of sanitation, medical care or comfort that is found in hospitals in First World countries. Although hospitals in the Philippines may not be as impressive as those found in the United States or Europe, the health-care system overall is good.

    Top Hospitals

    • Allianz Worldwide Care states that some of the top hospitals in the Philippines include the Makati Medical Centre, the Medical Centre in Alabama, the Asian Hospital and St. Luke's Medical Centre. The hospitals in and around Manila offer some of the highest quality of care on the islands.

    Rural Hospitals

    • According to the Washington Post, in rural Philippines, hospital services are declining. Some women die because they don't receive the medical attention they need. Hospitals outside of major urban areas offer only very basic health-care services.

    Malnutrition

    • One of the main problems that Filipinos grapple with is malnutrition. The poorer segment of the population is the most affected. The government has made frequent efforts to protect its poorer citizens from starvation.

    Considerations

    • The U.S. Embassy in Manila says that most Philippine hospitals will not accept health insurance policies from the United States. In the Philippines, the majority of hospitals require patients to first make a down payment before being admitted. Once a patient is discharged, he is required to pay the bill in full before leaving the hospital.

    Outsourcing

    • The Philippines also has a reputation of outsourcing its medical staff. The Philippines is one of the largest exporters of nurses, and doctors are also joining the exodus. Most doctors and nurses leave for monetary reasons. Nurses in the Philippines make $4,700 annually but can make ten times more in the United States.
