Climate changes such as sea level rise and periods of drought are common depending on the region of Barbados. Bridgetown is especially at risk, as are Holetown and beachfront hotels, apartments and houses. If weather systems do develop they can cause flooding to these low-lying areas.

Barbados is relatively flat. The central highland region of the island rises to 1,100 feet above sea level, but most of the rest of the island is fairly uniformly flat. During May, trade winds help to keep the heat and humidity in a more comfortable range; Bridgetown is somewhat more sheltered from wind. The official beginning of hurricane season is June 1, though it is possible (but highly unlikely) that a hurricane can develop during the month of May.
