What's the Weather Like in Spain?

Due to its unique global positioning, Spain's climate is incredibly varied. From the Northern Coast to the Mesetas to the Canary Islands, the country as a whole generally enjoys a temperate climate. The country can be divided into four climactic regions: the continental Mediterranean, the Mediterranean, the subtropical and the oceanic.
  1. General

    • Many people think of Spain as a country with perfect year-round weather. However, the country is marked by strong storms and high winds. In terms of temperature, average daily highs are in the upper 40s to mid 60s Fahrenheit in winter, the upper 60s to mid 80s in spring, the low 70s to mid 90s in summer and the low 70s to upper 80s in fall.

    Spring

    • Spring is beach season in Spain. From March to May, you can comfortably lounge on the Costa del Sol without an incredibly intense sun beating down on you. However, spring is also the most unpredictable season in Spain, and more than one vacationer has seen his trip rained out.

    Summer

    • During the summer, only tourists brave the large cities, as the temperatures regularly top 100 degrees. Weather during the summer is generally warm and almost every day is perfect. Northern Spain experiences cooler---although still pleasant---temperatures than the central and southern areas of the country.

    Fall

    • The autumn months mark a return to comfortable temperatures that still allow for beach days, whether on the Costa del Sol, the Costa Blanca or Barcelona. However, cooler, crisper air begins to prevail, allowing the leaves to change hues. The sun is less intense during the day, the evenings are cooler and rain is more common.

    Winter

    • With the exception of Andalusia, winter can be quite cold in Spain. Centrally located cities with high altitudes, including Madrid, often get the brunt of winter. Northern and Southern Spain are warmer and wetter in the winter, experiencing as much as 20 days of rain a month, while the mountainous regions are likely to see snowfall.
