Parks in Manaus, Brazil

Manaus is the capital city of the Brazilian state Amazonas; the largest state in the country. As the capital, Manaus is the most populated and modern city in the state, with a population around 1.5 million people. The city was founded in the mid-17th century and named after the the Manaus Indians, who were the indigenous population. Manaus is an ecological haven located on the fringe of the Amazon rain forest. The area has many beautiful public beaches, parks, conservatories and gardens.
  1. Ponta Negra Cultural, Sport and Leisure Park

    • Ponta Negra is a public beach park located about 13 kilometers from the Manaus historic downtown area. Since it is within walking distance, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city. The beach is bordered by a long sidewalk that is used by bicyclers, joggers and skaters. Myriad restaurants, bars, cafés and snack bars line the walk, which allows visitors to spend a full day -- from dawn to (past) dusk---at the park. The beach is also equipped with multiple volleyball courts and a large playground for children. Another feature of the park is the amphitheater that seats 15,000 viewers for spectacles and plays that run continuously.

    Municipal Park of Mindú

    • Covering an area of 330,000 square meters in a populated urban area, the Municipal Park of Mindú was created in 1992 in order to preserve what was left of the forest in the town area. It serves as an ecological zone for scientific, educational and leisure tourist activities and allows visitors to observe natural Brazilian wildlife. The park is home to some of the last sauim de coleira monkeys, a species that is nearly extinct. The park can be safely crossed without a guide as there is an information center and a library located inside for visitor convenience. Similar to the Ponta Negro Beach Park, the Municipal Park of Mindú maintains an amphitheater for the presentation of lectures and shows. The park contains special medicinal and herb gardens for cultural education purposes.

    Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden

    • The Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden is the largest in the world, covering 100 square kilometers. It is a private menagerie meets tropical jungle. The garden is home to an innumerable variety of animal and plant species that can be viewed from the many maintained paths that snake through the garden. It is in close proximity to Lake Janauri Ecological Park (located an hour outside of Manaus), so for the most adventurous travelers, they are easily visited back-to-back, though you will have to find a place to sleep.
