Have you ever wanted to take a trip to Colombia? Before you plan your trip, here are a few interesting facts about the country and its people.
  1. Location

    • Colombia sits on the northwestern side of the continent of South America. It's just south of Venezuela, north of Ecuador and Peru, east of Panama, and west of Brazil.

    Languages

    • Most Colombians speak Spanish, the official language. However, there are 81 total languages spoken in Colombia; these include Achagua, Wayuu, Paez, Embera, and Romani.

    Capital City

    • Santafe de Bogota is the capital of Colombia, as well as its most populated.

    Ethnicity

    • Colombia's population comes from three main racial groups--blacks, whites, and Indians. People of mixed Indian and white ancestry, called mestizos, make up more than half the population. The rest comprise of mulattoes (those with mixed black and white ancestry), zambos (those with mixed black and Indian ancestry), and blacks and Indians make up the rest of the minorities.

    Currency

    • The peso is the official currency of Colombia. The coins have a value from $5 up to $1,000, and the paper notes have a value from $2,000 to $50,000.

    Food

    • Colombian food is a diverse blend of European and indigenous cuisine. It includes a lot of meat, including seafood in the coastal areas. You may find delicacies, like roasted ants, in one part of Colombia, which wouldn't be acceptable to eat in another part of the country.

      The country also produces coffee, rice, bananas, shrimp, cocoa beans, and sugarcane.
