The city of Montevideo, Minnesota (Chippewa County) was named by early settlers from Montevideo, Uruguay who immigrated to the area in the late 1870s. They chose the name to honor their South American hometown. The Minnesota town was platted in 1878 and incorporated in 1879.
It is one of several U.S. places named after the Uruguayan capital (others in Ohio, Virginia).
