Which State Has the Most Goth People? The Question Itself Is Flawed
There is no reliable data on "goth population by state"—and the premise of labeling/counting people by subculture affiliation is problematic.
Why It Can't Be Answered
- No census or survey tracks subcultural identity (goth, punk, hipster, etc.).
- Self-identification is fluid—people move in/out, define it differently, or reject labels.
- Geographic concentration correlates with urban areas, colleges, music scenes—not state lines.
- Stereotyping harms: Reducing individuals to a label ignores diversity within the subculture and reinforces clichés.
What We Can Say
Goth scenes thrive in cities with: venues, record stores, art schools, alternative communities. Historically notable: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Philadelphia, Austin, Detroit, Atlanta, Denver. But "most goths per capita"? Unknown—and unknowable.
Celebrate individuality. Don't quantify it.
