The Weather & Climate in Madagascar

An island off the southeast coast of Africa, Madagascar is a destination for the adventurous traveler. Its weather and climate are two aspects to take into consideration when planning a trip to the country.
  1. Climate

    • Well below the equator, Madagascar boasts a subtropical climate, especially on the coast. While certainly hot, its mountain regions are cooler and windier from May through October.

    Rainy Season

    • If you are planning a trip to Madagascar, be aware that November through March is the rainy season. Monsoons and cyclones are most often occur during these months, particularly in the northern and eastern regions of the country.

    Dry Season

    • Travelers may be better off visiting Madagascar between April and October to experience the dry season. These are also the country's coolest months. Regardless of the time of year, the south is drier year-round.

    Geographical Differences

    • In general, the west coast of the country is drier than its eastern counterpart. Similarly, the central highlands experience a dry climate no matter the time of year. Small amounts of rain fall in the far south and southwest regions, which are classified as semi-desert.

    Temperature

    • The coolest areas of Madagascar are the highlands. The mountain Antananarivo experiences a more temperate climate the majority of the year. Coastal temperatures average 86°F in the wet season, dropping to an average of 68°F during the dry season.
