Bergamo is an ancient Roman city in northern Italy, in the Lombardy (or Lombardia) region. Bergamo is near Milan, about 45 minutes away driving. According to the Bergamo official website, the city "stands at the foot of the Orobian Prealps, on the northern border of the Po Plain, where the Seriana and Brembana Valleys (with the rivers Serio and Brembo) start." The area does not have vineyards. "The bedrock is granite, the forests are pine, and the summits rise above them in jagged splendour," states the website Italy Heaven.
The upper half of Bergamo, the Citta Alta (old city) is the ancient walled part, with quaint, winding streets. Renaissance, Baroque and Medieval buildings, including many churches, abound in the Citta Alta. You can take a funicular (a cable rail system that travels upward steeply) into the main part of the Citta Alta. The other part, the Citta Bassa, is more modern, with wider streets and newer buildings.
The summer doesn't get quite as hot as the temperature suggests, though, due to breezes that drift into the Bergamo area from Lake Como. The times of year with the most pleasant and mild weather tend to be spring and fall. Mara Locatelli of the Bergamo Tourist Office says that usually light jackets or raincoats are worn in the fall (September to November).
Bergamo's weather fits the standard pattern of weather for the Northern Hemisphere, with a cold winter, hot summer, and mild spring and fall. Temperatures in Bergamo range from -2 to 28 Celsius, or about 28.4 to 82.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Bergamo's precipitation varies from 56 to 129 mm per month, or about 2.2 to 5 inches. Relative humidity ranges between 67 and 79 percent. Humidity is lower in the spring and summer and higher in the winter.
You're most likely to hit rain in April, May and August, and rain or snow in October and November in Bergamo. Summer is not ideal for most people to visit, because of heat and because most businesses are closed in August, as in most of Italy. Spring or fall will give you the mildest weather for a trip to Bergamo. If you want winter sports, the cold winter temperatures may work fine for you. Several ski resorts in the Alps are located nearby.
