Lyon Climate & Weather

Located in the Rhone Valley, Lyon is the second largest city in France. The city is most well-known as a center for business. Through the 20th century, silk production was Lyon's major industry. Now, however, commerce and banking are predominant, and the city thrives as a result. Though not France's primary vacation destination, Lyon is a picturesque region that features a wealth of restaurants and shops, as well as several museums, markets, a popular theater scene and annual art and fashion festivals. Setting the scene for such a bustling city is a climate that changes greatly from season to season, staying just as varied as the city itself.
  1. Winter

    • Lyon lies near the French Alps, which means that cold winds blow down from the mountain range to create frigid Lyon winters. From December through March, Lyon experiences high temperatures around 45 degrees Fahrenheit, with lows in the low to mid 30s. Harsh winds and frequent snowfall can make the winter feel even colder.

    Spring

    • Spring in Lyon might not have the same ring to it as spring in Paris, but the weather is very similar. Temperatures from April through May average in the mid 60s, with highs in the low 70s and lows around 50 degrees. This makes spring weather very comfortable for sightseeing---just don't forget your umbrella, as spring also brings frequent rainfall to Lyon.

    Summer

    • June through September are Lyon's warmest months. June and September experience highs in the mid 70s, with lows in the mid 50s, while July and August can reach temperatures in the 90s, making them Lyon's hottest months. June and September are the most popular months for visiting Lyon, though the entire summer provides warm and sunny sightseeing weather.

    Fall

    • October and November are mild months in Lyon, with high temperatures in the upper 50s and low 60s, and lows in the mid 40s. This makes fall a pleasant time to visit Lyon; however, this time of year is also Lyon's rainiest season, so be sure to bring along rain gear if you're planning for autumn sightseeing.

    Fun Fact

    • The weather in Lyon produces more than just pleasant sightseeing conditions. Some of the world's most popular wines are made in and around Lyon, which borders Beaujolais, Burgundy and Cotes du Rhone.
