Maryland Climate & Weather

Maryland is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, and borders the Atlantic. The state experiences a vast diversity in climate and weather, though summer months are generally humid and hot and winter months are cold and dry. Area residents and tourists in this area can get the most out of their visit by planning appropriate dress for the state's weather.

    • Maryland features a vast diversity of landscapes, each of which have a unique geography and climate. According to Netstate, the state is separated into five main geographical areas including the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge Region, the Appalachian Ridge and Valley and the Appalachian Plateau. The Atlantic Coastal Plain is flat and is generally characterized by marshlands. The Piedmont region is marked by hills and valleys. The Blue Ridge Region features dense woodlands, and the Appalachian Ridge and Valley features farmland and mountainous terrain. The Appalachian Plateau is heavily forested and includes many rivers and mountains.

    Temperature

    • According to City Data, the average annual temperature in the western uplands of Maryland is 48°F and 59°F in the southeast. Eastern parts of the state including Baltimore, Ocean City and Annapolis are also moderated by the Atlantic Ocean and Chesapeake Bay. The highest temperature in Maryland was 109°F recorded in July of 1936. According to Netstate, Maryland has an average January temperature of 43°F and an average July temperature of 87°F.

    • In general, Maryland experiences hot and humid weather in the late spring and summer months. According to RSS Weather, Baltimore, Maryland, experiences sun with few clouds 56 percent of the days in the months of March, April and May. The organization also determined the city experiences sun 62 percent of the days in June, 64 percent of the days in July and 62 percent of the days in August. Baltimore, Maryland, has an average high of 64°F in April, 94°F in May, 83°F in June, 87°F in July and 85°F in August, according to RSS Weather.

    Fall and Winter

    • Maryland generally experiences cool, wet falls and dry, relatively mild winters. According to RSS Weather, Baltimore, Maryland, experiences sunshine with few clouds 51 percent of the days in November, 49 percent of the days in December, 51 percent of the days in January, and 55 percent of the days in February. The city has an average high of 78°F in September, 67°F in October, 67°F in October, 56°F in November, 46°F in December, 41°F in January, 44.8°F in February, and 54°F in March. Although Maryland often experiences snowstorms, the accumulation is rarely more than one to two inches.

    Precipitation

    • According to Netstate, the eastern coast of Maryland receives between 44 and 48 inches of precipitation on average each year. Regions in western Maryland receive approximately 50 to 52 inches of precipitation each year. Central Maryland receives between 35 and 44 inches of precipitation on average each year. The majority of this precipitation is in the form of rain.
