Luxor Climate & Weather

Luxor has many sights and sounds that make it an ideal vacation destination for anyone interested in Egyptian culture, the Nile River, the tomb of Nefertari, artifacts from the ancient city of Thebes and the Luxor Temple. However, visitors should take note of the harsh weather before venturing out to Luxor ill-prepared. The summer months can be especially harsh, while most tourists seem to prefer the fall and springtime the best. Take note that Luxor does not have a lot of natural shade and little to no rainfall every year, which means there is little relief from the desert conditions.
  1. Winter

    • Luxor doesn't have a traditional winter, as average temperatures still hover around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Luxor-Lux.Airports-Guides.com. These temperatures dip at nighttime, however, making winter nights exceptionally cold for such a naturally warm and dry place. Winter is also the season where locals and tourists can escape the exceptionally dry climate, at least for a little while when fog and dew materialize in the morning before quickly dissipating. According to the travel agency Travel Egypt, Luxor gets approximately eight to 10 hours of sunshine a day even in the winter.

    Spring

    • Spring is one of the best times of the year to visit Luxor because its temperatures are the most moderate. Though the region still gets substantial sunshine, the cool mornings have warmed a bit but the intense summer heat has yet to heat. Once May arrives, the heat becomes more intense, but between January and April Luxor experiences warm, but not excruciating, temperatures. Rainfall also tends to hit the most during spring, though that's not saying much. Luxor International Airport received 0.1 inches of rain in both February and May, according to Luxor-Lux.Airports-Guides.com. The only other month that the airport saw rainfall was October, when it received 0.2 inches. Wind, on the other hand, is plentiful in Luxor during the spring.

    Summer

    • Summer temperatures in Luxor can reach up to 113 degrees F, according to Luxor-Lux.Airports-Guides.com. The sun remains intense throughout the summer month, and although Luxor is close to the Nile River, the body of water does little to calm temperatures or provide a cool breeze. To combat these high temperatures, many locals try to get the majority of their work done in the mornings and evenings, when temperatures are more reasonable.

    Fall

    • The weather in fall is similar to the weather Luxor experiences in the spring. Temperatures are still moderate. The fall is when tourists begin traveling to Luxor and nearby Cairo. This is after the summer heat has dissolved and before the cold winter mornings and evenings roll in from winter.

    Overall

    • Luxor has a desert climate year-round. Though the weather can vary from season to season, the region is invariably ruled by sunshine, heat and dry weather. Visitors should note that Luxor does not have a lot of natural shade aside from a few well-placed trees. Much of the relief from the intense sunshine is the shade provided by the exteriors of tall buildings or the interiors of those buildings' air-conditioning systems.
