Kyoto Climate & Weather

Kyoto, the formal capital of Japan, is a breathtaking city that offers historical sites, beautiful nature scenes and friendly locals. When vacationing in Japan, many people choose to visit Kyoto and its neighboring city, Osaka, to learn more about Japan's history. Before you go, it's important to understand that Kyoto is a place of extreme temperatures, and its climate varies throughout the year.
  1. Fall

    • Fall occurs from the end of August to mid-November and is one of the most popular times to travel to Kyoto because of its mild temperatures, cool breezes and generally comfortable climate. Rainfall is low during this time of year as well, which allows tourists to see more while in Japan. Autumn weather is also considered predictable and stable, a definite plus when you have a limited amount of time to spend in Kyoto. Average temperatures in September are 75 degrees F; October's average is 65 degrees F, and November's is 55 degrees F.

    Winter

    • Winter months in Kyoto aren't considered ideal. In fact, they can sometimes be downright unbearable, especially for those used to warmer weather. With that said, Kyoto offers beautiful winter scenes that make a winter trip well worth it. Snow falls throughout the winter months, and temperatures often drop below freezing. Winter lasts from mid-November to early March, with average temperatures of 20 to 35 degrees F.

    Spring

    • Spring is the second most common time (next to fall) for tourists to plan a visit to Kyoto. This time of the year is slightly less predictable with regard to rain and temperature when compared with fall, but for the most part, it offers tourists pleasant weather and beautiful (though short-lived) cherry blossom sightings. Cherry blossoms in Kyoto burst into full throttle around the end of March and the beginning of April, with spring lasting until the end of May to early June. Spring temperatures are fickle, but generally fall between 50 and 65 degrees F.

    Summer

    • Kyoto is a very hot and humid place throughout the summer months. To make things worse, wind is less frequent, which often makes hot temperatures feel even hotter. Summer in Kyoto lasts from mid- to late June and lasts throughout much of August. Temperatures average 70 to 85 degrees F, and rainfall occurs often, especially during the month of July. Summer nights don't offer much relief, either. Fortunately, many hotels and hostels provide air conditioning for those staying overnight, as do most restaurants and shopping centers.

    How To Dress

    • Because of the diverse weather conditions in Kyoto, it is best to pack according to the month in which you're traveling. Throughout the summer months, you'll be safe with light, breathable clothing that offers relief on especially hot days. Short sleeves, tank tops, shorts and skirts are perfectly acceptable. Winter will require a full-fledged winter coat, but note that most places offer indoor heating. Pack a pair of gloves if you plan to do a lot of walking outside. For fall and spring, pack a light jacket, jeans and a variety of shirts to keep you comfortable.
