The Weather in California

California is considered a year-round travel destination, with weather to please everyone, from people who enjoy the sun to those who prefer the ski slopes. California enjoys all four seasons. In summer, the weather is at its best from mid-June through to August, but fog is to be expected. Spring season runs from March to May, and everything is fresh and green; even the desert areas are more pleasant at this time. Fall season lasts from September to November and is a good time to visit Northern California and enjoy the wine region. Winter skiing is best between December and February, but this is also the season for rain and winter storms.
  1. Los Angeles

    • Los Angeles, the City of Angels, is a well-known California city, famous for its entertainment industry, tourist attractions, crazy weather and smog. Situated in what is referred to as a Mediterranean climate, the city experiences warm to hot and humid summers and reasonably wet winters. The weather for most of the year is dry, with the Pacific Ocean breezes keeping the beach communities cooler, while further inland, the temperatures are warmer. Smog in the city is a Los Angeles experience during all four seasons. September and October are considered the best months to visit, in terms of climate.

    San Francisco

    • San Francisco is known for its peculiar weather conditions. San Francisco weather offers logic-defying cold summers and hot winters. For example, the city experiences very cold summers. June and July are cold months, with wet fog and cold, damp winds that can make the Fourth of July much colder than New Year's Eve. Autumn and winter are considered the best months where weather is concerned. Fog is an integral part of the summer. Surrounded on three sides by water, the city's climate is influenced by the cool currents from the Pacific Ocean. The occasional heat wave is to be expected.

    Sacramento

    • The city of Sacramento enjoys generally pleasant, mild weather throughout he year. Rainfall is generally during the spring and winter seasons; rains begin in November and end in February. Sacramento is surrounded by mountains, which help to protect the city to a large extent from harsh storms. Occasional thunderstorms, flooding and tornadoes do happen. Summers can be very hot, with occasional heat waves, but the nights are generally cooler. The city experiences dense fog during winter that dissipates by noontime. Snowfall is a rarity in this agricultural city.

    San Diego

    • San Diego has what is termed a semi-arid climate with mild, sunny weather for most part of the year. The warm Santa Ana winds blow in from the desert between the months of October to February, effectively putting a stop to most summer events. In San Diego, there are marked differences in temperature, due to the topography of the land. For example, a person can experience desert, mountain and coastal environments in the space of a single day. Rainfall is generally between December and March, and precipitation is lower than in other parts of the U.S. West Coast. The last snowfall was recorded in 2008.
