Things to Do in Nevada City, California

Nevada City, California is primarily known for its gold mining industry. Some of the famed attractions center on that fact. However, if gold mining activities are not for you, there are plenty of other interesting attractions to visit in the area. The outings are appropriate for families, friends and couples.

  1. Empire Mine State Historic Park

    • Visit Empire Mine, which is the site of the oldest, richest and largest gold mine in California. An Underground Tour will soon take guests for a 800 foot tram ride through the mining tunnels. Other tours go through the miners' cottages, the mineyard and the gardens. School groups are welcome. Over 12 miles of trails are available for hikers.

    Nevada Theatre

    • A show at Nevada Theatre provides both entertainment and history. Catch a wide range of performances, which generally play from Wednesdays through Sundays. As of September 2010, current running shows at the theatre were One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest and The Gods of Comedy vs The End. Movies such as Zero, Farewell and Agora are played there on the weekends.

    Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad

    • This railroad museum provides information about the history of trails in the Nevada City area. The main attraction on the tour, which goes through the museum, railyard and restoration shop, is Engine 5, a 1875 Baldwin. Other exhibits include the Rail Bus "Sarah Kidder," a 1970 model that drove tourists around and the Jeffrey Steam Car which came into being in 1901.

    Nevada City Carriage Company

    • Take a tour through the Nevada City Carrige Company's carriage house, where you will be transported back to the 19th century due to the style of the structure. In addition to getting to see the horses living in the stable, the tour guide will also tell you how the carriage house was built. Horse drawn carriages can be rented out for special occasions such as weddings.
