Winnemucca, Nevada, is a small city spanning about 8.3 square miles and is home to approximately 7,500 residents. Located at a junction between Highway 95 and Interstate 80 in northern Nevada, this high desert town is a stopover for travelers in the West.
Winnemucca has a large indoor events center that hosts a variety of major gatherings throughout the year. A motorcycle rally, a Basque festival, a '50s car show, a mule show and a draft horse challenge are the most notable events held annually at the center.
Hiking, hunting, biking and horseback riding are popular activities for residents and tourists in Winnemucca, and the city is home to five major casinos and two golf courses as well as several Old West museums.
Winnemucca's economy is rooted in mining and agriculture, though tourism also plays an important role. As of December 2010, the city government was encouraging manufacturing and renewable energy enterprises to stabilize the economy.
