Take a trip back in time and ride two separate trains that bring back memories of The Old West. The Virginia and Truckee Railroad Company website promotion offers a 3-hour railroad ride that it says begins in Carson City above the Carson River Canyon, running along the east side of Mound House before crossing a railroad bridge over U.S. Highway 50, which it says reinvents the history of The Old West. Customers are urged to keep a sharp lookout for old mines and silver ore veins as well as gold and silver mining towns while riding down the line, the promotion hints. Billions of dollars are being spent to refurbish the route of this train to establish authenticity, the website advises, and you can expect that when you arrive at Virginia City's F Street Depot Car, the train's last stop, a shuttle will take you to downtown C Street, where you can explore the area before boarding the train for your return trip home, according to the promotion.
The second train trip option is a 35-minute round-trip ride around Virginia City and Gold Hill. On this scenic ride, the train conductor becomes the travel guide as he recounts the story of Nevada's 19th century mining boom, when Virginia City was a very rich city, the promotion states, and you are also urged to watch for exposed veins of silver ore as the train moves along the route. Notably, the website points out that you will pass eight mines that were productive a long time ago.
