Things to Do in Mackinac City

While many Mackinac tourists will be hopping on a ferry bound for the island, there's plenty to do in the city itself. It's no wonder that historic Mackinac City--also officially spelled as Mackinaw--is Michigan's No. 1 tourist destination. But don't just look at the bridge, buy some of Mackinac's famous fudge and think you're all done. There are plenty of attractions and sites waiting to be explored.

  1. Mackinac City Attractions

    • Mackinac's downtown shopping district is filled with tourist shops, clothing stores and candy/fudge shops as well as an arcade and other attractions. Or you can drive up to the base of the bridge and visit a downtown from days gone by; Colonial Michilimackinac is a reconstructed fort and village--the perfect location for learning Mackinac's history.

Climb up the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse for a breathtaking view of the sparkling blue waters. If you prefer a little adventure with your history lesson, head over to Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park where you'll find historical buildings, informative exhibits, as well as a climbing wall and a thrilling zip line.

Cool off at Thunder Falls Family Waterpark or go parasailing over the Straits. If you're in the mood for some entertainment, check out the Jack Pine Lumberjack Shows or the free concerts at Conkling Heritage Park.

    Camping in Mackinac

    • Mackinac City is surrounded with plenty of options for camping. One great choice is the Mill Creek Campground, which boasts views of the island and the Mackinac Bridge. Hike or bike over the many trails on the campsite, swim in the heated pool, play mini-golf with the family or head over to the 18-hole golf course for more challenging time on the links. The campground also offers free nightly hay rides and rides in an antique fire truck. Stay in your own tent or camper, rent a rustic cabin, or check out Mill Creek's unusual IcoPod (a yurt-like structure).

    Outside the City

    • Travel north over the bridge and tour St. Ignace--be sure to stop at the Deer Ranch or try your luck at Kewadin Shores Casino. Keep traveling north toward the breathtakingly beautiful Tahquamenon Falls and stop as Oswald's Bear Ranch in Newberry, the largest bear-only ranch in the United States, where you can even have your picture taken with a bear cub.

If you have kids, be sure to travel south of Mackinac City and stop at Chillermania in Indian River. If you're lucky, Johnathon Rand (author of the popular Michigan Chillers and American Chillers series) might be on hand to autograph a copy of your favorite Chillers book.

Looking for a souvenir of your northern Michigan travels? Stop at Sea Shell City just off I-75 in Cheybogan. In addition to rows and rows of every type of sea shell imaginable, you'll find t-shirts, novelties and other mementos.
