Once you have moved to your new residence, you'll need to track down all of the necessities that make a place home. In your old city, you probably knew where to get everything. That may not be the case now, but with a little effort you can find everything in a short time.
Find the grocery stores you like the best, locate a drugstore, find the library, coffee shop, movie theater, local restaurants and other places where you know you'll need to revisit. Pause for a moment and think about all of the places that you visited in your old city. Find a satisfying equivalent in the new place. You might even find alternatives that are much better than the old city's offerings.
Depending on where you moved, learning about the local transportation system may be something you don't think about often, or it might be crucial to your existence here. If you live in a small- to medium-sized southern city, for example, you only need to know how to travel from place to place. If you moved to New York City or Los Angeles, then set aside time to study the bus routes, subway lines or rails so that you are not constantly lost trying to get to work, home or elsewhere.
One of the hardest things about leaving your old city is saying goodbye to your friends. You have cultivated relationships, perhaps for many years. Now, you'll just be able to see them occasionally and try your best to keep in touch through phone calls or social networking. The bottom line is, you're probably going to want to make a few new friends locally.
It'll be weird going out alone at first, but if you like live music, look into a music spot or try to find other places where people with your interests hang out. Start showing your face there regularly. Eventually, you will run into some friendly, like-minded people who may turn out to be your new friends in the city.
When neighbors or new friends ask you to attend a social gathering, you should go. Even if you are the newest one in the group of friends, never turn down a chance to mingle. This is one way you make friends. Soon, you'll find yourself surrounded by new people you like and will finally get over the uncomfortable feeling of being the new person in a strange place.
