Things to Do in New York City on a Sunday

While most towns and cities across the country are slower and more relaxed on Sundays than any other day, New York City is definitely open for business. Explore some of New York's Sunday traditions--you might even find a few deals, too. Remember when you're planning your city excursion that New York is a walkable city. It is definitely wheelchair accessible and handicapped friendly, but you should be prepared to get around under your own steam. Also, public transportation is by far the easiest way to get around the city. Subways, buses, cabs are plentiful.
  1. Save on Your Stay

    • Finding that special place to stay in the big city can be a challenge, especially if cost is an issue. But many of New York's greatest hotels offer deals on Sunday stays. With a little research, you can save 20 percent to 30 percent on your Sunday stay in dozens of hotels around the city and even get more on shopping, dining and other in-hotel services. The Algonquin, The Plaza, The Grand Hyatt and The Marriott Marquis are just a few of the storied and popular hotels offering Sunday deals to their guests. All you have to do is ask.

    Sunday Brunch

    • Sunday brunch in New York is a longstanding tradition. Some of the best restaurants put out a spread with everything from omelets, eggs Benedict, waffles, pancakes, carving stations and some of the best bloody marys and mimosas you'll find anywhere. Sample pecan praline pancakes at Eleven Madison Park, have duck or quail with your eggs at Centovini, dive into a full Swedish smorgasbord at Aquavit or take in a full English or Irish breakfast at any number of pubs around the city.

    Take in a Show

    • What's after brunch? Why not the theater? Most of the professional theaters in New York have a 2 or 3 p.m. curtain time on Sundays. It is a great way to see a Broadway or off-Broadway show because you can take your time arriving at the theater after a leisurely lunch or brunch or if you prefer, see the show, then venture out for an early dinner.

    Work It Off

    • What better way to walk off your Sunday repast than to take advantage of some of the best, and cost free, experiences in New York. Sunday has a different atmosphere than any other day walking in the city. See it to believe it on your day out. Walk one of the city's famous bridges -- you can walk the length of the Brooklyn Bridge from the South Street Seaport area and see the spectacular city skyline. Explore the city's back yard. Many of the roads through the park are closed to traffic on Sunday. Wander Central Park on foot or on wheels and see the skyscrapers rise out of the tree-lined view.
