In 2009, more than 45 million people visited New York City. The visitor-friendly city encompasses 301 square miles, and has over 18,000 restaurants and more than 80,000 hotels. When visiting New York City, do some preliminary homework so you know what fun things you can do.
  1. FAO Schwartz

    • FAO Schwartz was founded in 1862 by Frederick August Otto Schwarz and is the oldest toy store in the United States. The company's flagship store in New York City opened its doors to the public in 1986. The toy store, situated on New York's famous Fifth Avenue, is one of New York's best-loved tourist attractions. You can enjoy the on-site, dance-on piano keyboard and the 20,000 computer-controlled colored lights. The store's departments include the candy shop FAO Schweetz, a doll factory, a newborn nursery and a Barbie department. People of all ages can enjoy the store. Some of the merchandise you'll find includes games, puzzles, electronics, stuffed animals, riding toys and action figures.

    Top of the Rock Observation Deck

    • For a 360-degree view of New York City, you can visit Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center. The building's 67th, 69th, and 70th floors contain observation decks with outdoor viewing areas. Rockefeller Center is 850 feet high and is open 365 days a year. If views are obstructed due to bad weather, visitors can get new tickets for another date. The average visit lasts 45 minutes, and there is no time limit to stay on the observation deck. After visiting Top of the Rock, you can enjoy ice skating at the Rockefeller Center Ice Skating Rink or explore the nearby restaurants, shops and art galleries. As of November 2010, tickets start at $21 for adults and $14 for children ages six to 12. Tickets during sunrise and sunset are more expensive.

    The Metropolitan Museum of Art

    • The Metropolitan Museum of Art, also known as The Met, is one of the world's largest museums. Founded in 1870 and located in New York City's Central Park, visitors to The Met can view more than 2 million works of art ranging from prehistoric times to the present. Exhibits include a Greek and Roman gallery, an oceanic art gallery and a Tibetan arms and armor collection. For gifts, ornaments, apparel and cards, you can visit the on-site store. The Met is open every day except for non-holiday Mondays. As of November 2010, admission to the museum costs $20 for adults and children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult.
