Things to Do in New York City in March

New York City is still cold in March, however, the temperature is typically above freezing. This means that some of the outdoor activities are more accessible. However, although snow isn't as common, there can be quite a bit of rain so make sure you take an umbrella with you to outdoor activities.
  1. St. Patrick's Day Festivities

    • If you are in New York City on St. Patrick's day--March 17--visit one of the many Irish Pubs in the city. The pubs are usually packed with people celebrating this beloved holiday. The city also has an annual St. Patrick's day parade that marches down 5th Avenue. St. Patrick's Cathedral on Madison Avenue is another place to visit on St. Patrick's Day.

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island

    • The ride on the ferry necessary to reach both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island has mostly open air seating. This means the ride can be quite cold. However, once at either location there are numerous indoor displays and tours to occupy your time. This is a great time to look through the immigrant names on display time of year because there are not the usual number of tourists.

    Central Park

    • Native New Yorkers are just beginning to enjoy Central Park again in March. Often the month brings the first relatively warm days to the area and the park will be mostly free of snow. A spring day is the perfect time to explore the many activities in Central Park. Don't miss the old carousel, the zoo, and the park's many beautiful pathways. Central Park is located in the center of New York between 59th and 110th Streets.

    Broadway

    • There is never a bad time to visit a Broadway show. After a day of exploring the city, a relaxing night where you are able to sit and enjoy live entertainment is the perfect counterpoint. Dramas, comedies, musicals and remakes of Disney classics are all available on Broadway. Show information and tickets can be found online. It is also possible to buy tickets once you arrive in New York but there is a good chance they will be sold out if you wait until the last minute.

    American Museum of Natural History

    • Because sometimes the weather does not want to cooperate, it is always best to have an indoor back-up plan when visiting New York in March. In the event that it is too rainy or to cold, visit the Museum of Natural History. This massive museum can easily take several days to explore. In addition to the exhibits, there are also entertaining and educational shows.
