The signature landmark of the city is embodied in the Metropolitan Cathedral of Guadalajara. Construction on this stunning building began in 1558, and now represents the history and culture of the city. Located in the Centro Historico, the cathedral offers visitors a fascinating conglomeration of styles ranging from the Tuscan pillars donated by Fernando VII to neoclassical details. The most interesting piece of art, however, can be found in a sacristy of the cathedral, which an attendant must open for you. In it you will find "La Asuncion de la Virgen," a mural painted in 1650 by Bartolome Murillo.
There are eight notable museums in Guadalajara, offering art and history lovers a substantial and memorable tour of treasures. While they all offer spectacular displays, do not miss the Museo General de Guadalajara, which boasts natural history collections downstairs and excellent galleries upstairs, which explain the history of western Mexico. The museum structure itself was built in a baroque style in the late 1600s and contains an elaborate maze of halls that open onto secret courtyards.
Trace Mariachi music to its source in this charming and narrow plaza. The best time to visit is in the evenings, when performers come out to serenade locals and tourists alike lounging about the plaza. Request songs, but note that the prices can be quite steep, from $20 to $100 dollars per song.
Guadalajara has recently become celebrated for its incredible dining. Among all the superb options, there is one stand-out: The Birrieria Las 9 Esquinas is a restaurant for locals and the well-informed tourist. Located in the ancient Nine Corners plaza, this delightful eatery serves some of the best and most authentic dishes around. The atmosphere is homey, with tiled floors and decor reminiscent of a typical hacienda kitchen. The true appeal, however, is found in the birrias de chivo, shredded kid in a rich broth. For an unforgettable meal in a setting so representative of the city's culture, this restaurant is not to be missed. Note that the restaurant does not take credit cards.
