Christchurch, New Zealand: Climate & Weather

The first thing you must know about any place you are going to visit is what the weather is like. This determines what kind of clothing you are going to pack, what time of year you'll go and when high tourist season hits.
  1. Season

    • New Zealand is located in the Southern Hemisphere. Because of this, the seasons will be the opposite of what the United States and Europe are experiencing at the same time. Summertime is from December to February, with fall lasting from March to May, winter from June to August, and spring from September to November. Christchurch is New Zealand's second largest city, and is on the country's South Island.

    Temperatures

    • Temperatures in Christchurch are fairly constant and don't drastically change from one season to the other. Below are the average highs and lows for each season.

    Precipitation

    • If you are planning a trip to New Zealand, chances are you will see rain. Your best chance of avoiding it is in Christchurch, which averages around seven days of rainfall every season. Other areas, such as Bay of Islands, can receive as many as 16 days of rain in a season.

    Sun

    • Despite the country's high rainfall, New Zealand does receive a good amount of sunlight. It receives anywhere from 2,000 to 2,350 hours of light every year. During summer, the sun sets around 9 p.m. The longest day of the year is June 21. In comparison, Phuket, Thailand, receives around 2,650 hours of sunlight a year, while London sees about 1,470 hours of sun.

    Clothes

    • No matter what time of year you visit New Zealand and Christchurch, you should pack a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt. Summer nights can be cool. If traveling during the winter months, a heavy jacket with gloves and hat are strongly recommended. If you plan to venture into the mountainous regions, pack a raincoat.
