Lake Murray is the fifth-largest lake in South Carolina, with a surface area of 50,500 acres (79 sq mi / 204 km²). Impounded in 1930 by the Saluda Dam (Dreher Shoals Dam) on the Saluda River, it provides hydroelectric power, water supply, and flood control for the Midlands region.
The lake boasts ~650 miles of shoreline, numerous marinas, public access points, and is famed for striped bass fishing, sailing, and the annual July 4th fireworks display viewed from boats. Dreher Island State Park occupies three islands near the dam.
