What is the Florida gators name?

The Florida Gators are named after alligators, which are abundant in the state of Florida. The name was first used in 1906, when a group of students at the University of Florida decided to change the school's mascot from the Seminoles to the Gators. The decision was made after a series of close football games between Florida and Auburn, whose mascot was the Tigers. The students felt that the Gators would be a more appropriate mascot for a team from the state of Florida.
