Why were there so many on the Arizona when it sank?

The Arizona was not a passenger ship, it was a battleship used by the United States Navy during World War II. It was sunk on December 7, 1941, during the attack on Pearl Harbor. There were 1,177 sailors and Marines aboard the Arizona at the time of the attack. Of these, 1,177 were killed, making the Arizona the deadliest ship sunk during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
