San Francisco:
The city and bay were charted by Spanish explorer Don Gaspar de Portolá in 1769. Since the expedition reached the area on the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the explorer named it "San Francisco de Asís" in the saint's honor.
Los Angeles:
Spanish explorers led by Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo arrived at the area on August 2, 1769, the Catholic feast day of "Our Lady, Queen of the Angels" or "Nuestra Seňora la Reina de los Angeles." The settlement near the river became known as El Pueblo de Nuestra Seňora la Reina de los Angeles. In English, the name translates as"The Town of Our Lady Queen of the Angels." Over the years, the name eventually shortened to Los Angeles.
