California in 1712: Early Spanish Exploration and Mission Founding

In 1712, California saw notable Spanish activity: Portuguese explorer Juan Pérez de la Marcha mapped the coast in detail. The Spanish established the San Francisco Presidio, one of their first military outposts in Alta California. Mission San Antonio de Padua, the third Franciscan mission, was founded in the Salinas Valley. Critically, European diseases — especially smallpox — began devastating Native populations, initiating a demographic collapse that would reshape the region.
