Micronesia has an extensive archaeological history, with archaeological evidence suggesting human presence in the region as early as 2000 BC. The earliest Austronesian ancestors of Micronesians likely settled the region during the Neolithic period. The first European contact with Micronesia was in 1521, when Ferdinand Magellan became the first European to reach Guam during his circumnavigation of the world.
