San Onofre is Spanish for "Saint Onuphrius." Onuphrius was a 4th-century Egyptian Christian saint renowned for his extreme asceticism and solitary life in the desert.
The name is used for several places, most notably San Onofre State Beach and the former San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station in California.
