Lakers' Origins: From Minneapolis to Los Angeles

Minneapolis Lakers (1947–1960)

The franchise began as the Minneapolis Lakers in Minnesota, named for the state's "Land of 10,000 Lakes." They joined the NBL in 1947, then the BAA (precursor to the NBA) in 1949.

Early Dominance

  • 5 NBL championships (1948, 1949)
  • 1 BAA championship (1949)
  • 4 NBA titles in Minneapolis (1950, 1952, 1953, 1954)
  • Led by George Mikan, the NBA's first superstar big man.

Move to Los Angeles

Financial pressures and the lure of the West Coast market prompted relocation in 1960. They became the NBA's first West Coast team, retaining the "Lakers" name despite LA's lack of natural lakes.
