Tranquility Base** is the name given to the landing site of **Apollo 11** (July 20, 1969). It is located in **Mare Tranquillitatis** (Sea of Tranquility), a vast basaltic plain on the **Moon's near side**.

Why "Sea of Tranquility"?
- Mare (pl. Maria): Latin for "sea." Early astronomers thought dark plains were water. They're solidified lava (3.5–3.8 Ga).
- Smooth, flat, few craters — ideal for first landing.
- Equatorial → minimal fuel for return-to-orbit rendezvous.

**Not currently possible.** Protected as **"Heritage Site"** by NASA (2011 guidelines) and **UN COPUOS** discussions. Future Artemis / commercial missions may image from orbit. No tours.
