Origin of the colony name in Delaware?
New Castle was founded by the Dutch in 1651 and became part of the English colony of New York. In 1664, the English captured New Amsterdam and the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The English renamed New Netherland as New York and made New Castle part of the colony of Delaware. The name "Delaware" comes from the Delaware River. The Delaware River was named after Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, who was the governor of the Virginia Colony from 1610 to 1618. The name "Delaware" was first used to refer to the river in 1610 and was later applied to the colony.
