Where Is Taipei?

Taipei is the capital and largest metropolitan area of Taiwan (officially the Republic of China).

Location

• Island: Northern tip of Taiwan.
• Basin: Taipei Basin, surrounded by mountains (Yangmingshan to the north, Xueshan Range to the southeast).
• River: Tamsui (Danshui) River forms the western boundary of the city proper.
• Coordinates: 25.03° N, 121.56° E.

Metropolitan Area

Greater Taipei includes New Taipei City (enveloping Taipei on three sides), Keelung (port), and Taoyuan (airport). Total population ~7 million—roughly one-third of Taiwan’s people.

Significance

• Political, economic, and cultural center.
• Global tech hub (semiconductors, ICT).
