What is California English?

California English (sometimes abbreviated CE) is a regional subdialect of American English that is spoken by the majority of the population of the state of California. It is especially characteristic of the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and the greater San Diego area. However, the variety of English spoken in California is not strictly monovocalic. There is considerable regional, socio-economic and ethnic diversity in the state.
